Yelkanum Seclamatan (pronounced roughly "yel-KAY-nəm sə-KLAM-ə-tən") was an important leader of the Nooksack Indians. He was their chief in the late 1800s. People also knew him by other names like Chief Jim, Indian Jim, or Lynden Jim.

Yelkanum Seclamatan passed away in April 1911. His Nooksack name was Y'elʔqáy'nem Selh'émeten.

In the late 1870s, Yelkanum gave some of his land. This land was used to build a school. It was called the Nooksack Indian Methodist School. Clara and Rev. John Tennant helped build this school. Tennant Lake is named after Rev. John Tennant.

Yelkanum Seclamatan had a family. He was married to Fannie. Later, he married Clara Tennant. Clara was from the Lummi tribe.

Clara Tennant was the wife of Rev. John Tennant. After Rev. Tennant passed away in 1893, Yelkanum married Clara in 1903. Sadly, Clara passed away just three months later.

Later Years and Legacy

Yelkanum Seclamatan lived with his granddaughter, Emily Williams, in his later years. His passing was announced in The Bellingham Herald newspaper in April 1911.

Chief Yelkanum is remembered for his leadership. He helped his community and supported education. His actions show his dedication to the Nooksack people.
