The Story of Yellowfang
This section explains the main events and characters in Yellowfang's Secret.
Yellowkit's Special Power
When Yellowfang is born, she is called Yellowkit. Her parents are Brightflower and Brackenfoot. She has two siblings, Nutkit and Rowankit. Yellowkit has a very unusual power: she can feel the pain of other cats as if it were her own. For example, one day, both she and Nutkit feel stomach pain, even though only Nutkit is truly sick.
Yellowpaw's Training and Friendship
As Yellowkit grows older, she begins her training with Deerleap. She then earns the name Yellowpaw. During this time, she becomes very close with a cat named Raggedpelt. Other cats in the clan do not like Raggedpelt much. They think his father might have been a house cat. In the Warriors books, clan cats often look down on house cats, thinking they are weak.
Yellowpaw tries to help Raggedpaw learn about his father. But when they discover he really was a house cat, things get difficult. Hal, the house cat, does not want to be part of Raggedpelt's life. Sadly, Raggedpelt later causes Hal's death. Another female cat, Foxheart, also likes Raggedpelt, but he prefers Yellowpaw.
Becoming a Medicine Cat
Yellowpaw eventually becomes Yellowfang. Sagewhisker, the ShadowClan medicine cat, tells Yellowfang that her special power to feel pain would make her an excellent healer. At first, Yellowfang wants to be a warrior. However, she later changes her mind. Yellowfang becomes Sagewhisker's apprentice and takes the important vows of a medicine cat. These vows mean she cannot have a mate or kittens. But Yellowfang secretly stays close with Raggedpelt for a long time.
Brokenkit's Birth and Trouble
Yellowfang finds out she is going to have kittens. Because this goes against her medicine cat vows, Yellowfang gives birth in secret. Only one kitten survives. She names the kitten Brokenkit and gives him to Raggedpelt to raise. Many cats believe Foxheart is Brokenkit's mother.
Brokenkit grows up to be a spoiled and unkind cat. He eventually becomes a warrior named Brokentail. Later, he gains a high rank in the clan. Brokentail trains his apprentices very harshly. When Raggedpelt tells Brokentail that he is being too strict, Brokentail pretends to agree. However, Brokentail secretly plans to cause Raggedpelt's death to become the clan leader. Brokentail makes it look like cats from another clan, WindClan, were responsible for Raggedpelt's death.
Brokenstar's Cruel Rule
Brokentail then becomes the leader, Brokenstar. He rules ShadowClan in a very cruel way. Using his father's death as an excuse, he leads the clan to attack other clans. He also starts training young kittens to be warriors before they are six months old, which is against the clan rules. He even tells old cats to leave the camp.
When a young kitten dies in battle, Yellowfang speaks out against Brokenstar. Brokenstar then secretly plans to accuse her of the deaths of two other kittens. He then banishes her from the clan.
Yellowfang's New Path
Yellowfang leaves ShadowClan. Eventually, she enters ThunderClan territory. She is tired, angry, and hungry. There, she is found by Firepaw, a young ThunderClan apprentice. After a short struggle, Yellowfang gives up. Firepaw is later told by Bluestar, the ThunderClan leader, to care for Yellowfang as a punishment. This is because Firepaw fed Yellowfang before he fed the rest of the clan. This part of the story is also shown in the first Warriors book, Into the Wild, from Firepaw's point of view.
