About the Yellowish Bulbul's Name
Birds, like all living things, have scientific names. Scientists use these names to group animals. This helps everyone know exactly which animal they are talking about. The yellowish bulbul's scientific name is Hypsipetes everetti.
How Its Name Changed
The yellowish bulbul has had a few different scientific names! It was first placed in a group called Criniger. Later, it moved to the group Ixos. Finally, in 2010, scientists decided it best fit into the group Hypsipetes.
Other Names for This Bird
Sometimes, people call the yellowish bulbul by other names. These include Everett's bulbul, plain-throated bulbul, and yellow-washed bulbul.
The scientific name Hypsipetes everetti honors a person named Alfred Hart Everett. He was a British colonial administrator. He also loved collecting animals for scientific study. Yellowish bulbuls are most common in the Philippines.
Yellowish Bulbul Subspecies
A "subspecies" is like a special type within a species. These types look a little different or live in different places. Scientists currently recognize two subspecies of the yellowish bulbul:
- H. e. everetti - This subspecies was named by Tweeddale in 1877. You can find it in the east-central and south-eastern parts of the Philippines.
- Sulu bulbul (H. e. haynaldi) - This subspecies was named by Blasius, W in 1890. It was first thought to be its own species. It lives in the Sulu Archipelago, which is in the south-western Philippines.
Scientists once thought the Camiguin bulbul (H. catarmanensis) was a subspecies of the yellowish bulbul. The Camiguin bulbul lives on Camiguin Sur island. But newer studies show it is actually a completely different species!
Where the Yellowish Bulbul Lives
The yellowish bulbul is endemic to the Philippines. This means it is found only there and nowhere else in the world. Its natural habitat is warm, wet lowland forests. It loves places with lots of trees and moisture.
