Yi Sang-jae

Yi Sang-jae (born October 26, 1850, died March 29, 1927) was an important leader in Korea's history. He was a religious figure and a brave fighter for Korea's freedom. He lived during the final years of the Korean Empire. His work helped shape Korea's path to independence.

Yi Sang-jae was also known as Lee Sang-jae. He was born in a place called Jongji-ri, in Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. His birth name was Gey-ho.

A Leader for Korean Independence

Yi Sang-jae played a big role in Korea's fight for freedom. He led several important groups. These groups worked to make Korea a strong and independent nation.

The Independence Association

Yi Sang-jae was the president of the Independence Association. This group worked hard for Korea's independence. They wanted Korea to be free from outside control.

He also helped start Korea's very first private newspaper. This newspaper was called the Independence Newspaper. It shared important news and ideas with the Korean people.

Education and Freedom

Later, Japan ruled Korea. During this time, Yi Sang-jae worked hard for education. He wanted to create a private university for Koreans. This was important because it helped Koreans get an education. It also helped them keep their culture alive.
