Yiorgos Theotokas (pronounced Yor-gos Theo-toh-kas) was a very important Greek writer. He was born in 1905 in a city called Constantinople, which is now Istanbul, Turkey. He wrote many interesting books and essays during his life.

A Life of Writing

Yiorgos Theotokas became one of the main writers in a special group called the "Generation of the '30s." This group included many talented Greek authors who started writing around the 1930s. They often explored new ideas and ways of telling stories.

He studied in big cities like Athens, Paris, and London. His first major work was an essay called Free Spirit, which came out in 1929. An essay is a short piece of writing where the author shares their thoughts on a topic.

Before World War II, he wrote three important novels. A novel is a long story, usually with many characters and events. His first and most famous novel was Argo, published in 1936. This book was about the challenges and feelings of young people growing up during a difficult time. He also wrote The Demon in 1938 and Leonís in 1940.

After the war, Yiorgos Theotokas became very involved with the theatre. He even worked as the director of the Greek National Theatre two times. This is a very important role in the world of plays and performances.

Today, many people remember him for his friendships with other famous writers. He was good friends with George Seferis and Odysseas Elytis, who both won the Nobel Prize for their writing. Even now, his novel Argo is still printed and read by many people.

Yiorgos Theotokas passed away in Athens in 1966.
