Yip Man (1893–1972), also known as Ip Man, was a very important martial arts teacher. He was the first person to openly teach a special style of martial arts called Wing Chun. He taught many students in Hong Kong, and these students later helped spread Wing Chun all over the world.
Ip Man is most famous for being the teacher of the legendary martial artist and actor, Bruce Lee. He also taught other skilled students like Chu Shong-tin. Today, Wing Chun is a popular martial art taught in many countries, and lots of children learn it.

Who Was Yip Man?
Yip Man was born in 1893 in Foshan, Guangdong province, China. He came from a wealthy family. When he was young, he started learning Wing Chun from a master named Chan Wah-shun. He was a dedicated student and learned the art very well.
Learning Wing Chun
Yip Man began his Wing Chun training at a young age. He learned from several different teachers, which helped him become a very skilled and knowledgeable martial artist. He spent many years perfecting his techniques.
Moving to Hong Kong
After World War II, Yip Man moved to Hong Kong in 1949. This is where he started teaching Wing Chun openly to the public. Before him, Wing Chun was often taught in secret or only to a few chosen students. Yip Man changed this by opening schools and sharing his knowledge.
Yip Man's Famous Students
Yip Man taught many students who became famous in their own right. His most well-known student was Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee later became a global movie star and helped make martial arts popular around the world.
Bruce Lee's Connection
Bruce Lee started learning Wing Chun from Yip Man in 1954 when he was a teenager. He trained with Yip Man for several years. The Wing Chun principles Bruce Lee learned from Yip Man greatly influenced his own martial arts style, called Jeet Kune Do.
Wing Chun Today
Thanks to Yip Man's teaching and his students, Wing Chun is now practiced by millions of people worldwide. It is known for its direct and efficient movements, making it a very practical self-defense system. Many Wing Chun schools exist in different countries, continuing Yip Man's legacy.
