Yogananda D. Pittman is an American police officer. She is currently the chief of police at the University of California, Berkeley. Before this, she was an assistant chief and acting chief for the United States Capitol Police (USCP). She held these important roles during and after the events of January 6 United States Capitol attack in 2021.
She served as the acting chief of the USCP from January 8 to July 23, 2021. This was after the previous chief, Steven Sund, resigned. Her time as acting chief ended when J. Thomas Manger was appointed.

Education and Learning
Pittman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology in 1999. She received this from Morgan State University. Later, she earned a Master of Public Administration from Marist College. She also studied for a Doctor of Public Administration at West Chester University.
Her Career in Law Enforcement
Pittman joined the Capitol Police in 2001. This police force protects the U.S. Capitol building.
Early Roles and Promotions
In 2012, Pittman made history. She was one of the first Black female supervisors to become a captain in the Capitol Police. At that time, she was in charge of more than 400 officers and civilian staff. The next year, she helped plan security for the second inauguration of Barack Obama. This was a very big event.
During her time with the Capitol Police, Pittman worked in the United States Senate Division. She also served as an assistant chief of police. Her work involved protecting people and gathering important information. In 2020, she received an award. It was called the Women in Federal Law Enforcement's Outstanding Advocate for Women award.
Leading the Capitol Police
After Steven Sund resigned in 2021, Pittman became the acting chief of the Capitol Police. She was the first woman and the first African American to lead this police force.
On December 5, 2022, the University of California, Berkeley, announced something new. Pittman had taken on the role of chief of the Berkeley department. This is part of the UCPD. Her leadership in this new role began on February 1, 2023.
