Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery is a famous bakery and restaurant in New York City. It is located at 137 East Houston Street in the Lower East Side area of Manhattan. This special place has been selling delicious knishes since 1890. A knish is a tasty baked or fried dough filled with things like potato or meat.

The bakery first opened in 1890. Its current spot on Houston Street has been open since 1910. The Lower East Side has changed a lot over the years. Many Jewish families who lived there moved to other places. Yonah Schimmel's is one of the few Jewish businesses that still stands. It helps keep the history and food of that culture alive.

A famous review once said that New York politicians often take photos at the bakery. They are usually seen holding a knish. This shows how important the bakery is to the city's history.

A Long History

Around 1890, a man named Yonah Schimmel started the bakery. He was an immigrant from Romania. He began by selling knishes from a pushcart. As his business grew, he and his cousin Joseph Berger rented a small store. This store was also on Houston Street.

A few years later, Yonah Schimmel left the business. Joseph Berger took over but kept the original name. In 1910, the Berger family moved the bakery to its current location. Yonah Schimmel's has always been owned by the same family. Today, Yonah's great-nephew, Alex Wolfman, runs the bakery.

This bakery is more than just a place to eat. It is also a well-known landmark in New York City. Many artists have painted pictures of Yonah Schimmel's. For example, a painting by Hedy Pagremanski is in the Museum of the City of New York. An Irish painter named Harry Kernoff also painted the bakery in 1939. The bakery even appeared in the 2009 movie Whatever Works by Woody Allen.

The restaurant offers many kinds of knishes. They have the classic potato and kasha (buckwheat groats) knishes. These use the same recipe from when the bakery first opened. They also serve other Eastern European foods, like borscht. You can visit the bakery to pick up food. In recent years, they have also started delivering their knishes all over the country.
