Yorkshire Tea is a popular type of black tea. It has been made by the Bettys & Taylors Group since 1977. This tea became the best-selling tea brand in Britain in 2019.
The company started way back in 1886. It was founded by Charles Edward Taylor and was first called CE Taylor & Co. Later, its name was shortened to "Taylors". In 1962, another company called 'Betty's Tea Rooms' bought 'Taylors'. These two companies together now form the Bettys & Taylors Group. Taylors of Harrogate is still based in Harrogate, Yorkshire, where the first 'Betty's' tea room was.
The family of Fredrick Belmont, who started 'Bettys', still owns the group. The company is one of the few family-owned tea and coffee businesses left in the country. Yorkshire Tea competes with other big brands like PG Tips and Tetley. It is now the most bought tea brand in the UK.
Different Kinds of Yorkshire Tea
Yorkshire Tea uses different types of tea leaves. These leaves come from places like India, Sri Lanka, and Kenya. They are mixed together to create nine different kinds of tea.
These are the main types of Yorkshire Tea:
- Yorkshire Tea (the classic one)
- Yorkshire Decaf (without caffeine)
- Yorkshire Hardwater (made for areas with hard water in the United Kingdom)
- Yorkshire Gold (a richer blend)
- Breakfast Brew
- Bedtime Brew
- Biscuit Brew
- Caramelised Biscuit Brew
- Toast and Jam Brew
In 2016, the company launched Breakfast Brew and Bedtime Brew. Yorkshire Tea also added Biscuit Brew in 2018. This tea has a yummy malty flavor. Toast and Jam Brew came out in 2020, and Caramelised Biscuit Brew was released in 2024. However, Toast and Jam Brew was stopped in 2024.
How Yorkshire Tea Started
Charles Edward Taylor and his brother started their company in 1886. It was first called CE Taylor & Co. and later became "Taylor's". The brothers also opened "Tea Kiosks" in the Yorkshire towns of Harrogate and Ilkley.
In 1962, a local tea room called 'Betty's' bought 'Taylor's'. They renamed it 'Taylors of Harrogate'. This led to the creation of the Bettys & Taylors Group. The family of Fredrick Belmont, who founded 'Bettys Tea Rooms', still owns this group.
The group now uses the 'Bettys' and 'Taylors' names for different things. This includes Yorkshire Tea and Taylors Coffee Merchants. They also have Bettys Tea Rooms, Bettys Cookery School, and Bettys Confectionery.
Yorkshire Tea as a brand began in 1977. It was first made as a "Yorkshire blend for Yorkshire people." In the beginning, different blends were made for different parts of Yorkshire. This was because the water could be hard or soft in different areas. As the brand grew across the country, they made one main blend. This is the one in the orange-colored pack. But they still make a special blend for hard water areas. This one comes in green-colored packs.
In 2009, Prince Charles gave Yorkshire Tea a special award called a Royal Warrant. This means the company supplies products to the Royal Household.
The company also sponsored the TV show Heartbeat from 1998 to 2001. This show was set in Yorkshire.
By 2015, Yorkshire Tea was the third best-selling tea brand in Britain. It was behind Tetley and PG Tips. By September 2017, it moved up to second place, passing Tetley. In November 2019, Yorkshire Tea became the number one selling tea brand in the United Kingdom. It had 28% of the traditional black tea market.
