Yornup's History and Timber Industry
Yornup started out mainly as a place for timber milling. This means its main job was cutting down trees and turning them into wood for building.
Early Days of Timber Mills
One of the first big timber companies, Lewis and Reid, built a mill in Yornup. In 1923, this mill was sold to a well-known company called Bunning Brothers. They made the mill even better in 1935. The Bunning Brothers mill kept working until 1951. After that, a new, bigger mill started up nearby at Donnelly River.
The Railway Connection
To help move all that timber, a special railway line was built in 1948. This line connected the Donnelly Mill to Yornup. It was used for many years until 1970, when the last steam train stopped running on it.
What Yornup is Like Today
In the past, Yornup was a busy little community. It had its own school, a post office, a town hall, and even stores. Today, most of those buildings are gone.
The Yornup Town Hall
The only original building that still stands is the Yornup Town Hall. This hall is very important to the community. People still use it for events like dances and gatherings. It's a reminder of the town's long history.
Changes to the School Building
The old school building was moved in March 1996. It was taken to a new spot behind a house in Bridgetown. The idea was to create a special area to show off the town's history, but this plan never happened.
Modern Facilities in Yornup
Even though it's a small town, Yornup has some important modern facilities. There's a large power substation run by Western Power. This helps provide electricity to the surrounding areas. There are also plans to build an industrial estate in the area, which could bring new businesses and jobs.
