Yoshinobu Ishii (石井 義信, Ishii Yoshinobu, March 13, 1939 – April 26, 2018) was a famous Japanese football player and manager. He played as a Midfielder for many years. Ishii also played for and later managed the Japan national team. He is remembered for his success in Japanese football.

Playing Career: Club Success

Yoshinobu Ishii was born in Fukuyama on March 13, 1939. After finishing high school, he joined his local team, Toyo Industries, in 1957.

Joining the Japan Soccer League

In 1965, Toyo Industries became part of the new Japan Soccer League. This was a big step for Japanese football. Ishii's team was very successful during this time.

Winning Championships

Toyo Industries won the league championship three years in a row. They were champions in 1965, 1966, and 1967. They also won the Emperor's Cup twice, in 1965 and 1967. Ishii played 28 games in the league during these winning years.

Moving to a New Club

In 1968, Ishii moved to a new team called Towa Real Estate. This club later changed its name to Fujita Industries. His new team was promoted to the Japan Soccer League in 1972. Ishii played until 1975, when he retired as a player.

Playing for Japan: National Team

Yoshinobu Ishii also played for his country. On August 15, 1962, he played his first game for the Japan national team. This game was against the Singapore team. He played one game for Japan in total.

Coaching Career: Leading Teams

After his playing career, Ishii became a successful football manager.

Managing Fujita Industries

In 1975, while still playing for Fujita Industries, Ishii became the team's manager. He took over from Yukio Shimomura. Under his leadership, the club won the league championships in 1977 and 1979. They also won the 1979 Emperor's Cup. He left the club in 1980.

Managing the Japan National Team

In 1986, Ishii was chosen to manage the Japan national team. He replaced Takaji Mori. He led the team at the 1986 Asian Games. However, in October 1987, Japan did not qualify for the 1988 Summer Olympics. After this, he resigned as the national team manager.

Return to Club Management

In 1988, Ishii returned to manage Fujita Industries. However, in the 1989–90 season, the club was moved down to Division 2. He then resigned as manager again.

Yoshinobu Ishii passed away on April 26, 2018, at the age of 79.
