Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern is a secondary school located in Penylan, Cardiff, Wales. It is a mixed school, meaning both boys and girls attend. The school teaches in Welsh, making it a key part of Welsh language education. Students typically attend from ages 11 to 19. In 2022, the school had about 907 students. This included 131 older students in the sixth form.
The name 'Bro Edern' means 'Vale of Edern'. It is named after Saint Edern, a historical figure. His name is also remembered in the local area of Llanedeyrn. Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern is the newest of the three Welsh-medium secondary schools in Cardiff. The other two are Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr.
School History
How the School Started
Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern opened its doors in September 2012. It was established as Cardiff's third Welsh-medium secondary school. This was because more and more families wanted their children to be taught in Welsh.
Early Days and New Buildings
During its very first school year, from 2012 to 2013, the school had 71 students in Year 7. It was temporarily located at the site of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf. By September 2013, the school moved to its permanent home. This new location was the former site of St Teilo's Church in Wales High School.
School Inspections
The school had its first inspection in November 2017 by Estyn. Estyn is the education inspection body for Wales. The inspectors reported that "The school is a very close-knit community with an extremely caring and supportive ethos." This means the school felt like a strong family, where everyone cared for and supported each other. After this inspection, Estyn asked the school to share how it used technology to help students learn.
