Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern is a secondary school in Cardiff, Wales. It is a mixed school, meaning both boys and girls attend. Students learn through the Welsh language. The school is for young people aged 11 to 19 years old.
The school is located in the Penylan area of Cardiff. In 2022, about 907 students were enrolled there. This included 131 students in the sixth form, which is for the older students. In 2017, around 18% of the students came from homes where Welsh was spoken.
The name 'Bro Edern' means 'Vale of Edern'. It is named after Saint Edern. This saint is also remembered in the name of the nearby area, Llanedeyrn. Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern is the newest of the three Welsh-medium secondary schools in Cardiff. The other two are Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr.
School History
Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern opened in September 2012. It became Cardiff's third secondary school where lessons are taught in Welsh. This was because more and more families wanted their children to learn in Welsh.
During its first school year (2012–13), the school had 71 Year 7 students. It was temporarily located at the site of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf. By September 2013, the school moved to its permanent home. This new building used to be the site of St Teilo's Church in Wales High School.
The school had its first inspection in November 2017 by Estyn. Estyn is the education inspection body for Wales. They reported that "The school is a very close-knit community with an extremely caring and supportive ethos." After this inspection, Estyn asked the school to share how it uses computers and technology to help students learn.
