Discovering Ysgol Llanhari's History
Ysgol Llanhari opened its doors in 1974. It was one of the first secondary schools in the area to teach mainly in Welsh. It helped lead the way for Welsh-language education in South Wales.
How the School Grew Over Time
When it first opened, Ysgol Llanhari was in Mid Glamorgan. It served a very large area, from Tonteg and Cardiff in the east to Porthcawl and Maesteg in the west. The school quickly became popular. Many students wanted to attend, and it became very full.
Because so many students wanted to learn in Welsh, a new school was needed. In 1978, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf opened in Cardiff. This new school helped teach students from South Glamorgan in their own county.
Adding a Primary School Section
On June 6, 2011, it was announced that Ysgol Llanhari would become a school for younger children too. From 2012, it would teach students from ages 3 to 18. On September 3, 2012, the new primary section opened. The school was officially renamed Ysgol Llanhari, teaching all ages from 3 to 18.
