Yu Myung-hwan (Hangul: 유명환; born April 8, 1946) is a South Korean diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. He served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade from February 2008 to September 2010. This important role means he was in charge of South Korea's relationships with other countries. He left his job because of a situation involving his daughter getting a position in his department. Before this, he worked as an Ambassador for South Korea in countries like Israel, Japan, and the Philippines. An Ambassador is the highest-ranking diplomat representing their country abroad. Yu studied public administration at Seoul National University.
Why Yu Myung-hwan Left His Job
In 2010, Yu Myung-hwan resigned from his position as Minister. This happened because of questions raised about his daughter, Yu Hyun-sun. She was hired at the foreign ministry through a special hiring program. This situation led to his decision to step down from his role.
Awards and Special Recognitions
Yu Myung-hwan has received special awards for his work. These awards are called "honours" and they show that a person has done something important or excellent.
- In 2015, he received the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun. This is a very high honour from Japan. It is given to people who have made great achievements.
