Yu Myung-hwan (Hangul: 유명환) was born on April 8, 1946. He is a South Korean diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. Mr. Yu served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade for South Korea from February 2008 to September 2010.
Before becoming a minister, he worked as an ambassador. An ambassador is a country's top diplomat in another country. He was an ambassador to countries like Israel, Japan, and the Philippines. Mr. Yu studied public administration at Seoul National University.
A Job Controversy
In 2010, Mr. Yu stepped down from his role as Minister. This happened because there were questions about how his daughter, Yu Hyun-sun, got a job at the foreign ministry. She was hired through a special program. This situation led to public discussion and his decision to resign.
Awards and Recognition
Mr. Yu has received special honors for his work.
- In 2015, he was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun. This is a high honor from Japan.
