Early Life and Education

Yuichiro Hata was born on July 29, 1967. During his time as a student at Tamagawa University, he was involved with the Itochu Foundation. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the university in March 1993.

Early in his career, Hata worked as a secretary for his father, Tsutomu Hata. His father was serving in the House of Representatives at the time, which is the other part of Japan's Diet.

Political Journey

Hata began his career as a legislator when he was elected to the House of Councillors in 1999. He was a member of several political parties during his time in office. These included the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) and later the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP).

Serving as a Minister

On June 4, 2012, Yuichiro Hata was chosen to be the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. He was appointed by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda. This role meant he was in charge of things like land use, building projects, transportation, and tourism for the country.

His time as a minister ended on December 26, 2012. This happened after the Democratic Party of Japan lost the general election. Overall, Hata served as a legislator for five terms. At the time of his death in December 2020, he was the first Secretary-General of the CDP's group in the Upper House.

Views on Important Issues

Yuichiro Hata was generally part of Japan's center-left political groups. These parties usually focus on social equality and government involvement in the economy.

  • Constitution: He was against changing Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution. This article states that Japan cannot go to war.
  • Nuclear Power: After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, Hata became critical of using nuclear power. He believed Japan should work towards getting rid of its nuclear plants. He also thought Japan should not support nuclear projects in other countries.
