Yukio Sakurauchi's Life Story

Early Life and Family

Yukio Sakurauchi was born in a town called Hirose, in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. This area is now part of the city of Yasugi. His family had a history of being samurai, who were special warriors in Japan.

In 1885, his father moved to Yonago and started a business selling Water wheels. This business did not do well. So, in 1886, his family moved again to Sakaiminato. There, they started a new business trading goods. After that, in 1887, they began making and selling tofu.

Starting His Career

When Yukio was young, he left home in 1893 to find work. He worked at a paper mill in Yokohama for very little money. In 1895, he moved to Tokyo. He worked for a newspaper as a typesetter, which means he arranged the letters for printing.

By 1902, he became a reporter for a news agency called Nippon Telegraph. He then became an executive director at the Ogura Racing Association in 1907. He made a lot of money by investing in horses around 1908. This success led him to become the president of Saitama Electric Light Company in 1909. Later, in 1917, he became the president of Okayama Hydroelectric Company.

Becoming a Politician

Yukio Sakurauchi decided to enter politics. He was elected to the Lower House of the Diet of Japan in the 1920 General Election. He was part of a political party called Rikken Seiyūkai. He was reelected six times, showing he was popular with voters.

In 1925, he also became the president of the Ibiden company. Later, he changed his political party to the Rikken Minseitō. In 1927, he became the Secretary-General of this new party.

Important Roles in Government

Yukio Sakurauchi held several important jobs in the Japanese government. In 1931, Prime Minister Wakatsuki Reijirō chose him to be the Minister of Commerce and Industry. This role meant he was in charge of businesses and factories in Japan.

He returned to the government in 1939 under the Hirota administration. This time, he served as the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. In this job, he looked after farming and forests.

In 1940, he was asked to be the Treasury Minister under the Yonai administration. As Treasury Minister, he was responsible for the country's money and economy. During this time, like other Japanese politicians, he joined a group called the Taisei Yokusankai, which was created by Prime Minister Fumimaro Konoe. From May 1945 to April 1946, Sakurauchi was a member of the Privy Council, which advised the Emperor.

After Japan surrendered at the end of World War II, Yukio Sakurauchi was no longer allowed to hold public office in 1946. He passed away the following year.
