Yumi Obe (born February 15, 1975) is a former Japanese football player and manager. She was a talented defender who played for the Japan national team.

Playing for Clubs

Yumi Obe was born in Sakaiminato, Japan, on February 15, 1975. She started her professional football journey in 1991. She joined a team called Nikko Securities Dream Ladies.

She quickly became a star player. In 1991, she won the Young Player Award. From 1995 to 1998, she was chosen for the "Best Eleven" team four years in a row. Her team, Nikko Securities Dream Ladies, also won the L.League championship three times in a row, from 1996 to 1998.

Sadly, her club had to close down in 1998. Yumi then moved to OKI FC Winds in 1999. But this team also closed at the end of that season.

After that, she joined YKK Tohoku Ladies SC Flappers, which later became TEPCO Mareeze. She played there until she retired at the end of the 2006 season. Throughout her career, Yumi Obe was picked for the "Best Eleven" team a total of seven times!

Playing for Japan's National Team

Yumi Obe started playing for the Japanese national team when she was very young. Her first game was on August 21, 1991, against China. She was only 16 years old!

She played in many big tournaments for Japan. These included:

  • The FIFA Women's World Cup in 1991, 1995, and 2003.
  • The Summer Olympics in 1996 and 2004.

Yumi also played in several AFC Women's Championships and Asian Games. She was a very important player for her country. She even became the team captain!

By the time she stopped playing for Japan in 2004, she had played in 85 games. She scored 6 goals for her country.

Becoming a Coach

After her playing career, Yumi Obe also tried coaching. In 2006, while she was still playing for TEPCO Mareeze, the team's manager left. Yumi stepped up to manage the team herself. She was a "playing manager" for the 2006 Empress's Cup tournament in December of that year.
