Yungngora is a community for Aboriginal people in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is located in the northern part of the state. Yungngora is about 280 kilometers (174 miles) south-east of Broome. It is also about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south-west of Fitzroy Crossing. In 2016, 378 people lived in Yungngora.

Discovering Yungngora Community

This community is found on Noonkanbah Station. It sits right by the Fitzroy River. Yungngora is between the towns of Camballin and Fitzroy Crossing. It is also a starting point for visiting other communities further inland. These include Kadjina Community and Yakanarra Community. The main road to Yungngora is not paved. This means it can be hard to reach during the wet season when it rains a lot.

A Look Back: Yungngora's History

Some people from the Yungngora community were moved to Beagle Bay Community. This happened as part of the Stolen Generation. This was a sad time when many Aboriginal children were taken from their families.

In 1976, the land known as Noonkanbah was bought for the community. A big disagreement happened in 1979. An American oil company called AMAX wanted to drill for oil. They planned to drill at a sacred site on the station. The people of Yungngora strongly opposed this.

Later, in 2001, some land on Noonkanbah was given back to the community.

Learning and Education

Yungngora Community has its own school called Kulkarriya Community School. It opened in 1978. Students from pre-primary (kindergarten) up to Year 12 (the final year of high school) attend this school. In 2007, there were 87 students. The school follows the Western Australian education system.

Community Facilities and Services

Yungngora has several important services for its residents.

Powering the Community: Electricity

The community's electricity is now managed by Horizon Power. This is part of a government project to provide power to remote Aboriginal communities.

The power station uses four large diesel engines. It also has a solar power system with many panels. This solar system helps to provide clean energy. It also has batteries to store power. This helps keep the electricity supply steady. People in the community use special cards to pay for their electricity. This is similar to how many remote communities pay for power.

Water Supply

Yungngora gets its water from two bores (deep wells). These bores pump water from about 100 meters (328 feet) underground. Even though the community is next to the Fitzroy River, they use underground water. The water comes out of the ground very hot, sometimes between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius (122-140 degrees Fahrenheit). Because of this, cooling towers have been installed. Sometimes, the water supply can be interrupted.

Sewerage System

The community has a sewer system. It includes a pump station and special ponds. These ponds treat the wastewater on the northern edge of the community.

Fun and Games: Recreation

Yungngora has basketball courts and a football oval. The community has a football team called the "Noonkanbah Blues." They play in the Central Kimberley Football League.

Visitors to Yungngora can enjoy bush walking, fishing, and camping. If you want to visit, you need to get a permit first.

Shopping and Services

There is one store in Yungngora. It is owned and run by the community. Items at the store can be more expensive than in bigger towns. This is because of the cost of transporting goods to remote areas. There is also a workshop for mechanical repairs.
