Yuri I of Galicia (Ukrainian: Ю́рій Льво́вич, romanized: Yurii Lvovych) was an important ruler in Eastern Europe. He was the King of Ruthenia and the Prince of Volhynia. He was born around 1252 or 1257 and passed away in 1308. His full title showed his power: Yuri I, King of Ruthenia, Grand Prince of Kyiv, Volodymyr, Halych, Lutsk, and Dorohochyn.
A Royal Ruler
Yuri I ruled as the Prince of the Duchy of Belz from 1264 to 1301. After that, he became the King of Ruthenia, a large and powerful kingdom. His reign as king lasted from 1301 to 1308.
He was the son of Leo I of Galicia, who was also known as Lev Danylovych. His mother was Constance of Hungary. She was the daughter of King Béla IV of Hungary. This means Yuri I came from a very important royal family.
Yuri's Family Life
Yuri I was married three times during his life. His first wife was Yaroslavna of Tver. She passed away around 1286. His second wife was Euphemia of Kuyavia. She was the daughter of Casimir I of Kuyavia. Euphemia passed away on March 18, 1308. The name of his third wife is not known.
His Children
Yuri I had several children who continued his royal line.
Sons
- Mykhailo (born 1283, died 1286) - He was from Yuri's first marriage.
- Andrew of Galicia - He became a Prince of Ruthenia from 1308 to 1323.
- Lev II - He also became a Prince of Ruthenia from 1308 to 1323.
- Dmytro - He was a Lord of Ruthenia from 1340 to 1349. His parentage is sometimes debated.
Daughters
- Maria - She was a Princess of Ruthenia and passed away on January 11, 1341. She married Trojden I of Masovia.
- Anastasia - Her parents are not fully certain, but she passed away between 1364 and 1365. She married Alexander I of Tver.
