Yuya Matsushita (松下 優也, Matsushita Yūya, born May 24, 1990) is a Japanese pop and R&B singer and actor. He is known for his music and for acting in musicals and movies. His first song, "foolish foolish", came out on November 26, 2008. He became very popular after playing Sebastian Michaelis in the Black Butler musical. He is well-known in Japan and other countries.
In 2014, Yuya Matsushita started a boy band called X4. The group released their first album, "XVISION", in 2015. They made their major debut on October 7, 2015, with their single "Killing Me".

Yuya Matsushita's Early Life and Music Start
Yuya Matsushita was born in Nishinomiya, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, on May 24, 1990. He grew up with his mother and grandmother. When he was 12 years old in 2002, Yuya decided he wanted to be a musician. He joined the Caless Vocal & Dance School to learn more.
In October 2005, he visited New York City. This trip made him even more determined to become an artist. He chose to focus on music instead of going to high school. In 2007, he met a producer named ja:Jin Nakamura. Jin Nakamura created the song "foolish foolish" for him.
Yuya Matsushita's Career Beginnings
In 2008, Yuya Matsushita signed with Epic Records Japan Inc.. He filmed his first music video for "foolish foolish" in New York. Around the same time, he appeared in his first movie, Kanashii Boyfriend. His song, "Mr. "Broken Heart"", was also used as the movie's theme song.
In 2009, Yuya made his stage debut. He played Sebastian Michaelis in the Black Butler Musical-That Butler, Friendship. A solo version of the musical's theme song, "彼方へ", was on his third single.
Yuya Matsushita's Rise to Fame
In 2010, Yuya Matsushita's fourth single, "Trust Me", became popular. It was the first ending theme song for the Durarara!! anime. The song reached 10th place on the weekly Oricon charts. Another song from his fourth single, "ふたり", was used in the movie Toki o Kakeru Shōjo. Yuya also acted in this movie as Tetsuo Toi.
He played Sebastian Michaelis again in Musical Black Butler: The Most Beautiful Death in The World – A Thousand Souls and The Fallen Grim Reaper. A solo version of the theme song, "Hallucination", was on his fifth single, "YOU". Yuya also worked with Mahou No Island and released three songs for the novel "No Title". These songs were "声にならなくて Feat. Sista", "first snow Feat. Sista", and "その時までのサヨナラ". All three songs were included in his first album, "I AM ME".
His song "Bird" from his sixth single, "Bird / 4 Seasons", also became very popular. It was the first ending theme song for the Black Butler II anime. The song "4 Seasons" was used as a theme song for the Kobe Collection 2010 Autumn/Winter. It was also used in Hikari, Sono Saki E, a movie where Yuya played himself.
Yuya Matsushita's International Appearances and New Ventures
In 2011, Yuya's seventh single, "Paradise", was the theme song for the drama Quartet. He had a main role in this drama as Takeru. The song "Naturally" from his seventh single was featured in three Natural Beauty Basic commercials. He was also a special guest at MusicFest during FanimeCon in 2011. This was his first performance overseas, and he sang for over 4,000 fans. Later, Yuya starred in Asu no Hikari wo Tsukame 2 as Ren Kagami, a high school soccer captain.
In 2012, Yuya Matsushita released his second album, "2U", on February 22. This was a nod to him turning 22 years old. He appeared in his first commercial dressed as a butler to promote Shionogi's Popon-S Plus. This was a fun reference to his role as Sebastian Michaelis in Black Butler. Yuya also played Song Sam Dong in the Dream High musical. This musical was based on a popular Korean drama. He also had a supporting role as Kakeru in Pillow Talk ~Bed Of Speculation~. On December 5, he released "U 〜BEST MUSIC VIDEOS〜" and "U 〜BEST of BEST〜" at the same time.
In 2013, Yuya appeared in several stage plays. These included Bug's Value ~Even More Bursting~, and he played Sebastian Michaelis again in Black Butler: the Most Beautiful Death in the World. He also performed in The Alucard Show and My Host-chan S. He left Sony earlier in 2013. In July 2013, he started his own music label called Japanese Dream Records. He released his twelfth single, "SWEET LOVE", that same month. On August 28, he released the album #musicoverdose under his new label.
In 2014, Yuya Matsushita continued to work mostly in musical theatre. He appeared in musicals like Paco and the Magical Book, In the Heights, and Tumbling Final. He also played Sebastian Michaelis again in Black Butler: Lycoris that Blazes the Earth. He returned to his role as Kageki in Watashi no Host-chan for a special YouTube drama series. He released digital songs "ETERNAL NOW" on September 27 and "WHISPER MY NAME" on October 18. On December 15, he received the "amesta. Of The Year 2014" award for men.
On December 28, 2014, Yuya announced he would stop his solo music activities for a while. He formed a four-member group under his label called X4. On February 22, 2015, X4 released their first album, "XVISION". Yuya also starred in the movie Akegarasu in May 2015.
On August 24, 2023, it was announced that Yuya Matsushita joined the talent agency Amuse Inc.. In 2025, he played the role of Lola in the musical Kinky Boots.
