Black Butler is a popular manga series created by Yana Toboso. It first came out in 2006. This story is about a young boy and his mysterious butler in old-fashioned England. It mixes dark fantasy with exciting thriller elements.

The Story of Black Butler

The story of Black Butler takes place in Victorian era London, England. It follows a 12-year-old boy named Ciel Phantomhive. Ciel is the head of the important Phantomhive family. This family is known as the "Queen's Guarddogs" because they help Queen Victoria with secret missions.

Ciel's parents faced a terrible tragedy when he was 10 years old. To find out what happened and get justice, he made a special agreement with Sebastian Michaelis. Sebastian is Ciel's butler, but he is also a powerful demon. Sebastian helps Ciel with his missions and protects him. In return, Sebastian will get something very important from Ciel later on.

Beyond the Manga: Anime, Movies, and More

The world of Black Butler has grown far beyond the original manga. It includes popular anime series, movies, video games, and even stage musicals.

Anime Series

The first Black Butler anime TV series started in October 2008. It was made by A-1 Pictures. In English, the anime is produced by Funimation. This series had 36 episodes and several special episodes called OVAs.

Later, new anime series were released:

  • Black Butler: Book of Circus: This series came out in 2014 and had 10 episodes. It continued Ciel and Sebastian's adventures.
  • Black Butler: Book of Murder: This was a two-part OVA series released in late 2014. Each part was about 60 minutes long.

Movies and Musicals

The Black Butler story has also been adapted into films and stage shows:

  • A live-action movie called Black Butler was released.
  • An animated film, Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic, also brought the story to the big screen.
  • There have been several musicals based on the manga. Some of these include That Butler, Friendship and Musical Black Butler, The Most Beautiful Death in The World.
