TBS Holdings, Inc. is a big Japanese company that works in media and broadcasting. It's like the main company for the TV channel TBS Television and the radio station TBS Radio. TBS Holdings also runs two large networks: the Japan News Network (JNN) for TV, which has 28 partner stations, and the Japan Radio Network (JRN) for radio, with 34 partner stations.

You might know TBS for creating fun shows like the game show Takeshi's Castle and the exciting Sasuke (also known as Ninja Warrior). The Ninja Warrior show became so popular that it inspired similar obstacle course shows all over the world! The Story of TBS

TBS started a long time ago, in May 1951. It was first called Radio Tokyo (KRT) and began in Tokyo, Japan.

Early Days of Broadcasting

  • In December 1951, KRT started its radio broadcasts.
  • A few years later, in April 1955, KRT began TV broadcasting.
  • In August 1959, the Japan News Network (JNN) was created. This network helps share news across many TV stations.
  • In November 1960, KRT changed its name to Tokyo Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS).

Famous Shows and Changes

  • In July 1966, the popular Ultraman series started airing on TBS.
  • Ultraseven followed in October 1967, becoming even more popular.
  • In April 1971, Return Of Ultraman helped bring the Ultra Series back to fans.
  • In May 1986, TBS started broadcasting the fun game show Takeshi's Castle.
  • The last episode of Takeshi's Castle aired in October 1990.
  • In October 1994, TBS moved into its current main building, the TBS Broadcasting Center. People sometimes call it "Big Hat."

Modern Era of TBS

  • In April 2009, TBS became a certified broadcast holding company. This means it became the main company overseeing its TV and radio businesses. Its name changed to Tokyo Broadcasting System Holdings, Inc.
  • In March 2011, TBS broadcast a special news program without commercials after the big earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
  • In December 2011, TBS sold its baseball team, the Yokohama BayStars, to another company called DeNA.
  • In April 2020, TBS updated its logo.
  • In October 2020, the company's name changed again to TBS Holdings, Inc., to celebrate its 70th anniversary.
