Yves-François Blanchet is a Canadian politician. He was born on April 16, 1965. He has been the leader of the Bloc Québécois political party since 2019.

Mr. Blanchet is also a Member of Parliament (MP). He represents the area of Beloeil—Chambly in the Canadian Parliament. He was first elected as an MP in the 2019 federal election. Before becoming a federal politician, he was a member of the National Assembly of Quebec. He also served as a minister in the Quebec government.

Life and Early Career

Yves-François Blanchet was born in Drummondville, Quebec. His mother was a nurse and his father was a technician. He went to the Université de Montréal. There, he earned a bachelor's degree in history and anthropology in 1987.

Before entering politics, Mr. Blanchet worked as a teacher. He also started his own company, YFB Inc. This company managed artists, music, and concerts. From 2003 to 2006, he was the president of ADISQ. This is an organization that supports the music industry in Quebec. He received awards for his business work.

Time in Quebec Politics

In 2008, Mr. Blanchet was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec. He represented the area of Drummond. In 2012, he was re-elected, this time for the Johnson area.

He was a member of the Parti Québécois (PQ). From 2012 to 2014, he was the Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, Wildlife and Parks. This role meant he was in charge of protecting nature and fighting climate change in Quebec. He lost his seat in the 2014 Quebec election.

Before leading the Bloc Québécois, he wrote articles for a newspaper. He also appeared on a TV show called Les Ex.

On November 26, 2018, Yves-François Blanchet announced he wanted to become the leader of the Bloc Québécois. No one else ran for the position. So, he officially became the leader on January 17, 2019.

Federal Elections and Success

In the 2019 federal election, the Bloc Québécois did very well under his leadership. The party increased its number of seats in Parliament from 10 to 32. This made them the third-largest party in Canada. They also regained "official party status." This means they have enough members to get more resources and speaking time in Parliament.

In the 2021 federal election, the Bloc Québécois kept all 32 of its seats. They remained the third-largest party. In May 2023, Mr. Blanchet had a vote of confidence from his party members. He won with 97% of the votes. This showed strong support for his leadership.

Personal Life

Yves-François Blanchet was married to Nancy Déziel, but they are now separated. In September 2020, he tested positive for COVID-19. He had to stay at home in Shawinigan to recover.
