Z3 facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Z3 was a very important machine, often called the world's first working computer that could be programmed! It was designed by a clever inventor named Konrad Zuse. This amazing machine was built using 2000 special switches called relays.

The Z3 was a digital computer, which means it worked with numbers and information in a way that computers still do today. It could follow instructions automatically, just like modern computers. It was finished in Berlin, Germany, in 1941.

What Was the Z3?

The Z3 was a special kind of computer called an electromechanical computer. This means it used both electricity and moving parts (like the relays) to do its work. It was designed to solve difficult math problems.

How the Z3 Worked

The Z3 used 2000 relays, which are like tiny electrical switches that can turn on or off very quickly. It worked with numbers that were 22 bits long. A "bit" is the smallest piece of information a computer understands, like a simple "on" or "off."

The computer worked at a speed of about 5 to 10 Hz. This means it could do 5 to 10 operations every second. That might sound slow compared to today's computers, but it was incredibly fast for its time!

Storing Information

The instructions for the Z3 (its "program code") and the information it needed to work with (its "data") were stored on special punched film. Imagine a roll of film with holes punched in it – these holes told the Z3 what to do!

Who Used the Z3?

The Z3 was used by the German Aircraft Research Institute. They used it to figure out complex math problems about how airplane wings would behave. This was important for designing safer and better airplanes.

World War II and the Z3

Konrad Zuse wanted to make the Z3 even better by replacing the relays with faster electronic parts. He asked the German government for money to do this during World War II. However, they said no, because they thought this kind of development wasn't important for the war effort.

Sadly, the original Z3 was destroyed in 1943 during a bombing attack on Berlin.

The Z3's Legacy

Even though the original Z3 was destroyed, its importance was not forgotten. In the 1960s, Konrad Zuse's company built a perfect copy of the Z3. You can see this working replica today at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany.

The Z3 was also what we call "Turing-complete." This is a fancy way of saying it could solve any problem that a modern computer can, given enough time and memory. This was a huge step forward in computer science!

Because of the Z3 and other machines he created, Konrad Zuse is often called the inventor of the computer. He truly changed the world with his ideas.
