Zaharia Stancu (born October 7, 1902 – died December 5, 1974) was an important writer from Romania. He wrote many novels, poems, and was also a deep thinker (a philosopher). He held big jobs like leading the National Theatre Bucharest and being the President of the Writers' Union of Romania. He was also a top member of the Romanian Academy, which is a group of very smart people.

About Zaharia Stancu's Life

Zaharia Stancu was born in 1902 in a small village called Salcia, in Teleorman County, Romania. He left school when he was only thirteen years old. After that, he worked many different jobs. He was a tanner (someone who prepares animal skins), a shopkeeper in a grocery store, and even worked in a tobacco shop. He also worked as a clerk in a local government office.

In 1921, a famous writer named Gala Galaction helped him become a journalist. This was a big step for Stancu. Later, in 1933, he finished his studies at the University of Bucharest, where he learned about literature and philosophy.

His Early Writings and Challenges

Stancu's first book of poems, called Poeme simple (which means Simple Poems), came out in 1927. It was so good that he won the Romanian Writers' Prize for it!

During World War II, Stancu faced a difficult time. He was put in prison because he spoke out against the government that was in power then. This government was called the fascist government, led by Ion Antonescu. They were very strict and did not allow people to disagree with them. Stancu was held in a camp for people who were seen as political prisoners, meaning they were jailed for their beliefs.

After the War and His Achievements

After World War II ended, in 1946, Zaharia Stancu became the director of Romania's National Theater. This was a very important role in the arts. When the Communist government took over, he continued to be a respected figure. He became a full member of the Romanian Academy and was also the President of the Writers' Union of Romania from 1966 to 1974.

He won the Romanian State Prize for Literature, which is a big award in his country. In 1971, he also received the Herder Prize from the Austrian government, showing his work was recognized internationally.

His Famous Books

Between 1926 and 1944, Zaharia Stancu published six books of poetry. But he became even more famous for his novels. In 1948, his first major novel, Desculț [ro] (which means Barefoot), was published. This book was very popular and has been translated into thirty different languages around the world!

Some of his other important novels include:

  • Șatra [ro] (The Gypsy Tribe)
  • Jocul cu moartea (A Gamble with Death)
  • Pădurea nebună (The Mad Forest)

Two of his novels, A Gamble with Death and The Mad Forest, were even made into movies.
