About the Zalmon Richards House

The Zalmon Richards House is located in the Logan Circle area of Washington, D.C. It sits on Corcoran Street NW, between 13th and 14th Streets. This house is part of a row of Victorian brick houses that line the street.

What Does the House Look Like?

The house has 2.5 stories, meaning it has two full floors and a half-story. It also has a raised basement. The roof is a special type called a mansard roof, which gives it a full third floor in the attic. The front of the house has three main sections. The entrance is set back under a round arch. On the first floor, there's a cool window section that sticks out. It's shaped like a polygon and has a fancy roof with brackets.

The windows on the second floor have curved tops. They are decorated with special hoods that look like small crowns. The right side of the building also has a window that sticks out, called an oriel window. It looks similar to the front window section. We don't know who built the house or exactly when it was finished.

Who Was Zalmon Richards?

Zalmon Richards bought this house in 1882. By then, he was already a very important person in education. He was the founder and first president of the National Teachers Association. This group is now known as the National Education Association, a huge organization for teachers.

Richards grew up and went to school in Massachusetts. He started teaching when he was just 17 years old. He was always organizing teachers wherever he worked. This work led him to create the National Teachers Association in 1857. Zalmon Richards lived in this house from 1882 until he passed away in 1899. He even taught lessons in one of its rooms.
