Confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers

The Zanskar River is a cool and important river in the northern part of India. It flows through the amazing Ladakh region, high up in the Himalayas. This river is famous for its incredible Zanskar Gorge, which is a super deep canyon it has carved over many years. The Zanskar River is a major branch, also called a tributary, of the mighty Indus River.

Where the Zanskar River Starts

The Zanskar River actually begins from two main branches, like two arms joining together.

The First Branch

One part of the river starts in an area called Ropshu. From there, it flows towards the west until it reaches the town of Zanskar. This part of the river helps create the famous Zanskar Gorge.

The Second Branch

The other part of the Zanskar River gets its water from the melting ice of glaciers in the middle of Zanskar. This branch flows towards the south-east until it reaches a place called Padam.

How the Branches Join

After reaching Padam, the second branch turns north. It then collects more water from another stream called the Khurna River. Finally, both branches come together to form the main Zanskar River. Another stream, called Zora, also flows north from the southern areas and joins the Zanskar River.

Journey to the Indus River

After these branches join, the Zanskar River continues its journey north. It flows through the stunning landscapes of Ladakh. Eventually, all its waters empty into the much larger Indus River. This meeting point is a beautiful sight, showing where two big rivers become one.
