Zap Mama sings in French and English. Their music has strong roots in African traditions.
The Start of Zap Mama
Zap Mama played their very first concert in 1989. This was an exciting beginning for the group. In 1991, they recorded their first album. It was simply called Zap Mama. They recorded it in Brussels, Belgium. The album was later released by a company called Crammed Discs.
Zap Mama's Unique Sound
Marie Daulne, the leader of Zap Mama, is known for her special way of making music. She creates polyphonic and harmonic sounds. This means many different voices and notes blend together beautifully. Her music mixes traditional African instruments with modern styles like R&B and Hip-hop.
Marie believes the voice itself is a powerful instrument. She focuses a lot on vocals in all of Zap Mama's songs.
