Zayd ibn Harithah (Arabic: زَيْد ٱبْن حَارِثَة, Zayd ibn Ḥārithah) lived from about 581 to 629 CE. He was an important early Muslim and a close companion of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. Zayd was also Muhammad's adopted son.
Many people believe Zayd was the third person to accept Islam. The first was Muhammad's wife, Khadija bint Khuwaylid. The second was Muhammad's cousin, Ali ibn Abi Talib.

Zayd's Early Life and Freedom
Zayd was born around 581 CE in a place called Najd on the Arabian Peninsula. When he was young, he became a servant in the home of Khadija, who later became Muhammad's wife.
Muhammad later freed Zayd. He then legally adopted Zayd as his own son. This made Zayd a part of Muhammad's family.
A Brave Commander for Islam
Zayd became a leader in the early Muslim army. He led several important military missions during Muhammad's lifetime. These missions helped to spread and protect the new religion of Islam.
In September 629 CE, Zayd led his last mission. He set out with his army to a city called Bosra, which was part of the Byzantine Empire. However, the Muslim army met a large Byzantine force.
The Battle of Mu'tah
This meeting led to the Battle of Mu'tah. Zayd fought bravely in this battle. Sadly, he was killed during the fight. He is remembered as a martyr, someone who died for their faith.
Zayd was married to important women connected to Muhammad's household. These included Muhammad's cousin, Zaynab bint Jahsh, and his loyal servant, Barakah (Umm Ayman).
