Early Life and Family
Zeena was born in San Francisco, California. Her parents were Anton LaVey and Diane Hegarty.
From 1988 to 2015, Zeena was married to Nikolas Schreck. He was also her bandmate in Radio Werewolf. They separated in 2007 and divorced in 2015. Zeena decided to keep her married last name.
Artistic Journey and Education
Zeena's art, music, and writing are inspired by spiritual traditions. From a young age, she was drawn to artists who used spiritual ideas in their work.
As a teenager, she studied theater and film. At 16, Zeena passed her high school equivalency exam. This allowed her to start working and attend City College of San Francisco. She studied drama there. She also trained at other famous acting schools. Her studies focused on ancient Greek theater and improvisation.
Filmmaker Kenneth Anger was Zeena's godfather and mentor. He shared his artistic influences with her when she was young. These influences included other directors like Curtis Harrington. Zeena later became friends with Curtis Harrington. He cast her in his last film, Usher (2000).
Spiritual Path
Zeena became interested in ancient spiritual practices. These practices were connected to the Egyptian god Set. She once visited a museum in Vienna, Austria. There, she had a powerful experience at an altar dedicated to Set. This experience helped her see her future path clearly.
In 2002, Zeena became a High Priestess in the Temple of Set.
Sethian Liberation Movement
The Sethian Liberation Movement was started on November 8, 2002. Zeena Schreck left the Temple of Set along with four other leaders. They explained their reasons in a letter.
This new group, first called "The Storm," became the Sethian Liberation Movement. It was described as a group of teachers and students working together. They chose to focus on mutual respect rather than strict rules.
Music and Performance Art
The 8/8/88 Event
On August 8, 1988, an event took place at the Strand Theater in San Francisco. It was for the film debut of a mockumentary about Charles Manson. Nikolas Schreck organized the event. Zeena spoke at the start of the gathering. A film of her baptism was also shown.
Zeena said this was the only time she performed live with Nikolas and Evil Wilhelm. This event marked a change in the band Radio Werewolf. Other artists like NON also performed. A film crew from Geraldo Rivera's show filmed the event.
Radio Werewolf
From 1988 to 1993, Zeena was a co-leader of the experimental music group Radio Werewolf. She wrote music, sang, played instruments, and designed artwork for their albums. Her performances during this time were mainly in Europe.
In 2012, Radio Werewolf released The Vinyl Solution. This was their first official release in 20 years.
In 2016, Classic Rock magazine listed Radio Werewolf as one of the '25 weirdest bands of all time'. They noted the band's unique style.
Solo Music Career
Performa 13, New York
On November 8, 2013, Zeena performed at the Performa art festival in New York. She was joined by musicians Hisham Bharoocha and Anders Hermund. Her performance used sounds and voices inspired by spiritual practices. This was her first solo show in her home country since moving to Europe in 1990.
David Sanderson described the event. He said Zeena stood like a "twenty-foot tall goddess." Her powerful presence and the sounds created a unique experience for the audience.
Wave-Gotik-Treffen Music Festival
On May 23, 2015, Zeena returned to music as a solo artist in Europe. This was at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen festival in Leipzig, Germany. She performed at the Egyptian Museum in Leipzig. Zeena created a special soundscape for this unique setting. She performed with Cory Vielma and John Murphy. This was one of John Murphy's last performances before he passed away. Zeena performed a traditional Tibetan Buddhist ceremony for him.
In 2016, a tribute album for John Murphy was released. It included a live track from Zeena's concert. The album booklet also featured a portrait of Murphy drawn by Zeena.
First Solo Recording
On March 11, 2020, Zeena released her first solo recording. It was called "Bring Me The Head of F.W. Murnau: A Ghost Story in Six Acts." This work was inspired by news that the director's head had been stolen. Many sounds in the recording were captured at Murnau's former home and grave in Germany.
