Zeus and Roxanne is a fun comedy and adventure film from 1997. It was made for families and stars Steve Guttenberg, Kathleen Quinlan, and Miko Hughes. The movie is all about the special friendship between a dog named Zeus and a dolphin named Roxanne.

Plot Summary

Zeus Meets Roxanne

One morning, a dog named Zeus goes to the pier. He sees a dolphin and is amazed by how it moves. Zeus then goes home to his owner, Terry Barnett. Terry is a musician. His son, Jordan, seems to take good care of Zeus.

Later, Zeus chases a cat. He accidentally messes up the garden of Mary Beth Dunhill. Mary Beth is a marine biologist. She is also the Barnetts' next-door neighbor. Terry calms Zeus down and says sorry to Mary Beth. She is not happy with him.

A Special Friendship Begins

Mary Beth goes to her job, and Zeus follows her. He sees a picture of the same dolphin he saw earlier. At work, Mary Beth meets her research friend, Becky. She also sees her rival, Claude Carver.

Mary Beth and Becky go out on a boat. They want to study the dolphin, whom they call Roxanne. Zeus secretly gets on the boat with them. While they are in the ocean, Zeus falls off the boat. Roxanne saves him from a shark. She lets him ride on her back back to the boat. This surprises Mary Beth and Becky. They realize Zeus and Roxanne can talk to each other. This is called "inter-species communication."

On the way home, Mary Beth sees her daughters, Judith and Nora. They are roller skating, which Mary Beth does not want them to do. When they get home, Mary Beth asks Jordan if she can borrow Zeus. She wants him for her research on Roxanne. She hopes to let Roxanne go back into the wild. Jordan agrees. He and Terry join Mary Beth in her research.

New Friendships and Challenges

Over the next few days, Terry starts to like Mary Beth. He finds new ideas for his music. Jordan becomes good friends with Judith and Nora. Terry saves Judith and Nora when they are skating in a factory. After this, Mary Beth asks Terry on a date. They spend the night at a beach resort and share an awkward kiss.

Meanwhile, Claude wants money for his own research. He tries to steal Mary Beth's research. But Zeus stops him in funny ways. Claude then tries to make his own dolphins bond with other animals. But his attempts always fail.

A Big Decision and Rescue

Jordan, Judith, and Nora come up with a plan. They convince Terry to move into Mary Beth's house. Terry, Jordan, and Zeus move in. But Terry sees a photo of his late wife. He decides to stick to his original plan. He wants to travel to another town to write music. This makes both Zeus and Roxanne sad.

Zeus runs away from their hotel. He goes back to Mary Beth's research center. Terry and Jordan realize where he went and go back to town. Mary Beth uses a special underwater vehicle. She goes to check the seabed. Claude had said Roxanne was caught in a fishing net and died.

Zeus gets back to the research center. Claude catches him. Claude wants to use Zeus to trick Roxanne. Roxanne is actually alive. Claude wants to capture her. But Zeus and Roxanne work together. They trap Claude and his helper in a net. The police arrest them.

Happy Ending

Mary Beth's underwater vehicle gets stuck in fishing nets. She opens the hatch to escape, but water floods inside. Roxanne leads Terry to Mary Beth. Terry frees her from the trapped vehicle.

After this, Jordan, Judith, and Nora convince Terry to marry Mary Beth. At their wedding, Mary Beth gets money for her research on Zeus and Roxanne. Right after the wedding, a group of dolphins appears. Zeus convinces Roxanne to join them. Zeus watches happily with Terry, Mary Beth, Jordan, Judith, and Nora. Roxanne leaps into the air with the other dolphins.
