Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov (born May 6, 1951 – died August 2, 2020) was a famous Greco-Roman wrestler from Kazakhstan. He was known for his amazing strength and skill in the sport. Zhaksylyk won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1980 and became a world champion in 1981.

Early Life and Wrestling Career
Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov started wrestling in 1969. He quickly became very good at the sport. He won the Soviet Union's national wrestling title twice. These wins happened in 1975 and again in 1980. His hard work and dedication led him to become one of the best wrestlers in his weight class.
Olympic and World Champion
Zhaksylyk's biggest achievement came in 1980. He competed at the Olympic Games held in Moscow. There, he won a gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling. This made him an Olympic champion. The next year, in 1981, he proved his skill again. He won a world title at the World Wrestling Championships.
Life After Wrestling
After he stopped competing, Zhaksylyk continued to work in sports. From 1984 to 1993, he was the director of a sports school. This school was located in the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan. In 1993, he decided to create his own sports club. He named it "Zhaksylyk" after himself. He was the president of this club.
Remembering a Legend
Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov is still remembered today. Since 2001, a special wrestling tournament has been held every year. This tournament is for young wrestlers and takes place in Almaty. It is held in his honor. This helps keep his memory and his love for wrestling alive.
Film and Monuments
In 2019, a movie called "Zhaksylyk" was made about his life. The film showed his journey from a young age to becoming a famous athlete. Different actors played Zhaksylyk at various stages of his life.
After his passing, a special honor was given to him. On December 2, 2020, a large building was renamed. The Martial Arts Palace in Nur-Sultan now carries his name. This building is a place where many sports events happen. On September 8, 2021, a monument was also unveiled. This statue stands next to the palace, celebrating his legacy.
