The Zhangixalus moltrechti is a cool type of frog. It belongs to the Rhacophoridae family, which includes many tree frogs. This frog only lives in Taiwan, which means it's endemic there. You can find it in many hilly parts of the island. People call it by different names like Moltrecht's green treefrog or Taiwan treefrog.

Where Does the Name Come From?

The second part of the frog's name, moltrechti, is a tribute to a person. It honors Arnold Moltrecht. He was a scientist from Latvia who studied insects. He also collected animals and plants in Taiwan.

What Does This Frog Look Like?

The Zhangixalus moltrechti is a medium-sized tree frog. Female frogs are usually about 5 to 6 centimeters long. Male frogs are a bit smaller, around 3.6 to 4.2 centimeters long.

This frog has special tips on its fingers and toes. These tips are like little sticky pads. They help the frog climb trees easily. Its skin is smooth and feels nice.

The frog is mostly green in color. Some frogs might have a few white spots on their bodies. Their belly is a yellowish-white color. The hidden parts of their back legs are red or orange. These parts also have black spots. The frog's iris, which is the colored part of its eye, is orange-red.

Where Does This Frog Live?

The Zhangixalus moltrechti lives in different places. You can find it in forests, fruit orchards, and tea farms. It lives from sea level up to 2500 meters high.

How Does This Frog Reproduce?

These frogs like to lay their eggs in still water. They use ponds, pools, or even ditches by the road. Female frogs lay their eggs in foam nests. These nests are often above the water. They attach them to tree branches, bushes, or walls.

After the eggs hatch, rain helps the tiny tadpoles. The rain washes them into the water below. They can also breed in small pools in streams.

Frogs living high up in the mountains breed in spring and summer. This is usually from April to September. Frogs living closer to sea level breed in late autumn and early spring. This happens from October to March. Frogs in the middle elevations can breed all year. But they lay the most eggs in spring.

Is This Frog Safe?

The IUCN is a group that checks on animals. They say this frog is "least concern" for extinction. This means there are many of them, and they are not in danger.
