Zhanna Pintusevich-Block (born July 6, 1972) is a former world champion sprinter from Ukraine. She competed in many big events, including the Olympic Games. Her birth name was Zhanna Tarnopolskaya.

Early Life and Background

Zhanna Pintusevich-Block grew up in Nizhyn, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time. She was raised by her mother. Her family lived in a small home and used a coal stove for heat.

Track and Field Career

Zhanna started her amazing track career early. In 1991, she won two gold medals at the European Junior Championships. She won the 100 metres and 200 metres races. She also earned a silver medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay.

In 1992, Zhanna won the 60 metres race at the European Indoor Championships. The next year, 1993, she won a bronze medal in the same event at the World Championships in Toronto.

She became a world champion in the 200 metres in 1997. Then, in 2001, she won the World 100 metres championship. She also won two silver medals at the World Championships and three silver medals at the European Championships in sprint events. In 2001, Ukraine named her "Person of the Year" for Sports. This was a big honor!

Zhanna took part in the 100 metres and 200 metres races at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2000 Summer Olympics. She made it to the finals three times. She also competed in the 100 metres and 4 x 100 metres relay at the 2004 Olympics. While she never won an Olympic medal, she finished fourth in the 100 metres final in Sydney. Her fastest time for the 100 metres is 10.82 seconds. She set this record in Edmonton, Canada, on August 6, 2001.

In 2011, Zhanna was banned from sports for two years due to rule violations. Her husband and coach, Mark Block, also received a ban from sports for issues related to fair play.

Personal Life

Zhanna Pintusevich-Block married her coach, Mark Block, in 1999. They have one daughter together.
