Zhantoro Satybaldiyev: A Leader for Kyrgyzstan
Zhantoro Satybaldiyev is a well-known figure in Kyrgyz politics. He has held important roles, including being the head of government for his country. His work focused on helping Kyrgyzstan grow and solve big challenges.
Early Life and Education
Satybaldiyev was born in Osh, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time, in 1956. He studied engineering and construction at the Frunze Polytechnic Institute. He earned his bachelor's degree from there in 1979.
Becoming Prime Minister
On September 5, 2012, the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan chose Satybaldiyev to be the new Prime Minister. He was elected with a large majority of votes. This happened after the previous government, led by Prime Minister Omurbek Babanov, faced problems and broke apart. There were concerns about the economy and some accusations of corruption.
Tackling Big Challenges
Many people saw Satybaldiyev as a "technocrat." This means he was known for his technical skills and practical approach to solving problems. His main goal as Prime Minister was to bring stability back to Kyrgyzstan. He also worked to encourage more investments in the country.
The Kumtor Gold Mine Issue
One of the biggest challenges Satybaldiyev faced was about the Kumtor Gold Mine. This mine is very important for Kyrgyzstan's economy. It contributes a lot to the country's total economic output, known as GDP. Some groups, like the Ata-Zhurt party, wanted the mine to be taken over by the government. This is called nationalization.
The Kumtor mine is owned by a Canadian company called Centerra Gold. When the mine's production slowed down, it affected Kyrgyzstan's economy. People from the southern part of the country, especially Jalal-Abad, were very vocal about nationalizing the mine.
On October 1, 2012, Prime Minister Satybaldiyev visited the mine. He promised that the government would not take it over. He believed that nationalizing the mine would not help reduce poverty in the long run.
In May 2013, some people protested at the mine, demanding nationalization. There were clashes during these protests, and some people got hurt. In response, Satybaldiyev said the government would find other ways to get more money from the mine. This could include new taxes or other agreements.
