Zhantoro Satybaldiyev (born on January 6, 1956) is a politician from Kyrgyzstan. He served as the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan from September 2012 to March 2014. Before becoming Prime Minister, he held other important roles in the government.
Early Life and Education
Zhantoro Satybaldiyev was born in Osh, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time, in 1956. He went to the Frunze Polytechnic Institute. In 1979, he earned a degree in engineering and construction.
Political Career
Satybaldiyev became the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan on September 5, 2012. The country's Parliament chose him for this important job. He was elected after the previous government faced some challenges.
Leading the Country
Many people saw Satybaldiyev as a "technocrat." This means he was known for his technical skills and practical approach to solving problems. His main goal was to bring stability and trust back to Kyrgyzstan. He also wanted to encourage more investments in the country.
One big challenge he faced was about the Kumtor Gold Mine. This mine is very important to Kyrgyzstan's economy. It adds a lot to the country's total economic output. Some groups wanted the government to take over the mine from the Canadian company that owned it.
Satybaldiyev visited the mine in October 2012. He promised that the government would not take it over. He believed that taking over the mine would not help reduce poverty in the country.
In May 2013, some people protested at the mine. They wanted the government to take control of it. About 50 people were hurt during these protests. In response, Satybaldiyev said the government would find ways to get more money from the mine. This could be through taxes or other agreements.
