Ziad Rahbani (Arabic: زياد الرحباني 1 January 1956 – 26 July 2025) was a famous Lebanese composer, pianist, and writer. He was also known for sharing his thoughts on politics. Ziad was the son of Fairuz, one of the most beloved singers in Lebanon and the Arab world. His father, Assi Rahbani, was a key figure in modern Arabic music. Ziad Rahbani often used his plays and music to comment on Lebanese society and politics, especially during and after the Lebanese Civil War.

About Ziad Rahbani

Early Life and Family

Ziad Rahbani was born in Lebanon. His parents were the famous Lebanese composer Assi Rahbani and the legendary singer Fairuz. His uncles, Mansour and Elias Rahbani, were also well-known musicians. Growing up in such a musical family, Ziad was surrounded by art and creativity from a young age.

A Young Talent Emerges

Ziad showed his artistic talent early on. His first known writings were created when he was just a teenager. In 1973, at only 17 years old, Ziad composed his first music for his mother, Fairuz. This happened when his father, Assi Rahbani, was in the hospital. Ziad's uncle, Mansour Rahbani, asked him to compose music for a song about his father's absence. This song, "Saalouni El Nass" (People Asked Me), became very popular and helped Ziad become known in the music world.

Ziad also started acting on stage. He appeared in his parents' musical Al Mahatta as a detective. Later, he played a policeman in another Rahbani Brothers' play, Mays el Rim.

Music and Plays with a Message

Ziad Rahbani began creating his own plays, starting with Sahriyyeh. His plays often included strong messages about society and politics. He used humor and music to talk about important issues in Lebanon. Many young people felt that Ziad's plays spoke for their generation, especially during the difficult times of the Lebanese Civil War. He was a playwright, director, composer, pianist, and actor all at once.

Besides his own plays, Ziad also acted in films. He starred in the 2003 movie The Kite.

Working with Other Artists

Throughout his career, Ziad Rahbani worked with many talented singers. He released several albums, both on his own and with other artists. He collaborated with singers like Salma Mosfi and Latifa. His music often blended different styles, including traditional Arabic music and jazz.

His Musical Legacy

Ziad Rahbani created a large collection of music. He released many studio albums, each with his unique sound. He also composed numerous songs for his mother, Fairuz, which became some of her most famous hits. His work for stage plays and radio shows also left a lasting mark on Lebanese culture. His music is known for its deep meaning, catchy tunes, and often, its clever comments on life.
