Southern Rhodesia

Zimbabwe Rhodesia was a country in southern Africa that was not recognized by most other countries. It existed for a very short time, from June 1, 1979, to December 12, 1979. Before this, it was known as the Republic of Rhodesia. After Zimbabwe Rhodesia, the area briefly became a British colony again, called Southern Rhodesia. Finally, it became the country we know today as the Republic of Zimbabwe.

What Was Zimbabwe Rhodesia?

Zimbabwe Rhodesia was a country in southern Africa. It was formed after a long period of political change. The country was created to try and bring peace and a new government to the region.

A New Name for an Old Place

Before 1979, the country was called Rhodesia. It was ruled by a white minority government. Many people, especially the Black African population, wanted a government where everyone had a say. This led to a long struggle.

The Short Life of a Nation

In 1979, an agreement was made to create a new government. This new government included more Black African leaders. The country was then renamed Zimbabwe Rhodesia. This was seen as a step towards a more fair government.

Why Was It Not Recognized?

Most countries around the world did not recognize Zimbabwe Rhodesia as a real country. This was because they felt the changes did not go far enough. They believed the new government was still not truly fair to everyone.

Leaders of Zimbabwe Rhodesia

During its short time, Zimbabwe Rhodesia had its own leaders. These leaders worked to set up the new government. They tried to bring stability to the country.

The President

The President of Zimbabwe Rhodesia was Josiah Gumede. He was the head of state. His role was similar to a president in other countries. He represented the nation.

The Prime Minister

The Prime Minister was Abel Muzorewa. He was the head of government. He was in charge of the daily running of the country. He worked to make new laws and policies.

The End of Zimbabwe Rhodesia

Zimbabwe Rhodesia did not last long. After a few months, more talks were held. These talks aimed to create a truly independent and fair country.

The Lancaster House Agreement

These important talks happened in London, at a place called Lancaster House. Many different groups from Zimbabwe Rhodesia took part. They discussed how to create a new, fully independent nation.

Birth of Zimbabwe

The talks led to an agreement. This agreement meant that Zimbabwe Rhodesia would end. The country would go back to being a British colony for a short time. This was a temporary step. After this, the country would become fully independent. This new, independent country was named Zimbabwe. This happened on April 18, 1980.

Geography and People

Zimbabwe Rhodesia was located in southern Africa. It had a varied landscape. The country was home to many different groups of people.

Where Was It?

The country was in the same area as present-day Zimbabwe. It is a landlocked country. This means it has no coastline. It is surrounded by other countries.

Languages Spoken

The official language was English. However, many other languages were widely spoken. These included Shona and Sindebele. These are still important languages in Zimbabwe today.

Population and Size

In 1979, about 6.9 million people lived in Zimbabwe Rhodesia. The country covered an area of about 390,580 square kilometers. This is roughly the size of Germany.
