Zip City is a small community in Lauderdale County, located in the northern part of Alabama. It sits where Alabama Highway 17 meets County Road 8. Zip City is in the Central Time Zone of the United States. It is also part of the larger Florence - Muscle Shoals area, often called "The Shoals".
History of Zip City
The first people to settle in Zip City from outside the area arrived in 1817. The community got its interesting name, "Zip City," in the 1920s. People said that drivers would "zip" or speed through the town. They were often heading towards the Tennessee state line.
Zip City in Popular Culture
Zip City has become well-known because of a song. The band Drive-By Truckers wrote a song called "Zip City." Mike Cooley, one of the band's founders, wrote the song in 2001. He lived in the area for a long time. The song was featured on their 2001 album, Southern Rock Opera.
The song is very popular with fans. David Dye, from "The World Cafe" radio show, said that many listeners felt the album, including "Zip City," described their lives.
