Zipeg facts for kids
Zipeg was a free computer program. It was also an open-source program. This means its code was available for anyone to see and use. Zipeg's main job was to extract files. It could open many different types of compressed files. Think of these as digital boxes that hold many other files. Zipeg worked on both Mac and Windows computers. It was best known for letting you see what was inside these files. You could preview the files before fully opening them. Zipeg could not compress files itself. It could only open and extract them.

How Zipeg Worked
Zipeg was built using parts of another program called 7-Zip. Its user interface, which is what you see and click on, was made using Java. This part of the program was also open source.
What Zipeg Could Open
Zipeg could open many different types of compressed files. Some of the common ones included:
- ZIP
- 7z
- RAR
- TAR
- GZ
- BZIP2
It also supported other formats like ARJ, LHA/LZH, TGZ, CPIO, RPM, CHM, Z, ISO, CBR, CBZ, EAR, and WAR.
Smart Features
Zipeg had some clever features. It could automatically figure out filenames written in different languages. This meant it could correctly show names with special characters. It also read small preview pictures from JPEG photos. These were called Exif thumbnails. Zipeg used these to show you a quick peek of the image. This was helpful for seeing what was inside a file without opening it fully.
Development Status
The development of Zipeg stopped a while ago. The last version, 2.9.4, was released in July 2012. The official website, zipeg.com, is no longer working. The source code for Zipeg was archived when Google Code, where it was stored, closed down in early 2016. There has been no new activity on the developer's GitHub account related to Zipeg since then. This means the program is no longer being updated or supported.
