Zlata Moiseyevna Tkach (born Zlata Beyrihman; May 16, 1928 – January 1, 2006) was a talented composer and music teacher from Moldova. She made history as the first woman to become a professional composer in Moldova. She wrote many different kinds of music, including songs for children and operas.

Early Life and Moving to Chișinău

Zlata Beyrihman was born on May 16, 1928, in a village called Lozovo. This village was in a region known as Bessarabia. Her parents were Moisey Bentsionovich Beyrihman and Freida Mendelevna Koifman. When Zlata was very young, her family moved to Chișinău. There, she went to a primary school for girls. She also started learning to play the violin from her father.

After finishing primary school, Zlata continued her education. She attended the 'Regina Maria' grammar school in Chișinău.

World War II and First Song

During World War II, Zlata and her mother had to leave their home. They were evacuated to Central Asia. However, Zlata got separated from her mother during the journey. She ended up in the city of Namangan in Uzbekistan. This area was facing health challenges like typhus fever.

Zlata stayed in an orphanage there and went to secondary school. It was during this difficult time that she wrote her very first song, which she called "Sailors." In 1943, after her city was freed, she was finally reunited with her family. They all returned to Chișinău.

Family Life and Education

In 1949, Zlata married Efim Markovich Tkach. He was a music expert from Moldova. Efim wrote and edited many books in Russian and Moldovan languages. In 1953, Zlata and Efim had a son named Lyova.

Zlata first studied physics and mathematics at the University of Chișinău. Later, she decided to follow her passion for music. She joined the Musicology Department at the Chișinău Conservatory. A conservatory is a special school for music. She graduated from there in 1952. She learned how to compose music from Leonid Gurov. She also continued her violin studies with I. L. Daylisa.

Teaching and Becoming a Professor

From 1952 to 1962, Zlata taught at a music school in Chișinău. In 1957, she went back to the Conservatory to study composition even more deeply. After finishing these studies in 1962, she became a teacher at the Conservatory herself. She continued to work there for the rest of her life.

In 1986, she became an Associate Professor. Then, in 1993, she became a full Professor of composition. This was a big achievement for her.

Achievements and Recognition

Zlata Tkach was celebrated for being the first woman to become a professional composer in Moldova. She received many honors for her work. In 1974, she was named an Honored Artist of the Moldavian SSR. She won the State Prize of Moldova in 1982. She also received the Order of Work Merit.

Zlata Tkach passed away in 2006 in Chișinău.

Zlata Tkach's Music

Zlata Tkach created about 800 musical pieces during her life. Her works include many different types of music:

  • Sonatas: These are pieces usually for one or two instruments.
  • String quartets: Music written for four string instruments, like violins and cellos.
  • Suites: A collection of short musical pieces.
  • Vocal music: Songs for singers.
  • Choral and instrumental works: Music for choirs and musical instruments.

One of her most famous works is the children's opera "Goat with Three Kids" (Capra cu trei iezi). She wrote it in 1966. She later updated it, and it was reintroduced in 1983 as "The Impostor Wolf" (Lupul impostor).

  • Dine guter nomen (Your Good Name, in Yiddish). This was a song cycle based on poems by Chic Driesse. Published in Chișinău in 1996.
  • Sholom Aleichem: the collection of vocal works. Published in Chișinău in 2001.
  • Dos glekele (Bell, based on poems by Jewish poets in Yiddish). Published in Berlin in 2004.
  • Flacăra iubirii (Flame of Love). These were romantic songs based on poems by Agnes Rosca. Published in Chișinău in 2006.
