Zoé Maria Chatzidakis (born April 4, 1955, died January 22, 2025) was a brilliant French mathematician. She worked as a top researcher at a famous school in Paris, France, called the École Normale Supérieure. Zoé studied special areas of math called model theory and difference algebra. She was even asked to give important talks called the Tarski Lectures in 2020, but they were delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Her Journey in Mathematics

Studying at Yale

Zoé Chatzidakis went to Yale University in the United States. There, she earned her Ph.D. in 1984. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in a subject. Her main teacher was Angus Macintyre. For her Ph.D., she wrote a long paper about the model theory of profinite groups.

Working in Paris

After her studies, Zoé became a Senior Researcher. She also led a team in the math department at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. Her team focused on areas of math called Algebra and Geometry.

Awards and Recognition

Zoé Chatzidakis received many important awards for her work. These awards showed how much her contributions to mathematics were valued.

Major Prizes

In 2013, she won the Leconte Prize. This is a special award given to scientists. She was also invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2014. This is a very big event where mathematicians from all over the world share their ideas.

Special Professorship

In 2020, Zoé was named a Chern Professor at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI). This is a highly respected position for leading mathematicians.
