Zone Point facts for kids
Zone Point is a special place located at the very southern tip of the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall, United Kingdom. It stretches out into Falmouth Bay, close to the town of St Mawes. In the local Cornish language, it's called Sawan Hir, which means 'long chasm'.
This area is about 500 meters (or 550 yards) to the east-southeast of the famous St. Anthony's Lighthouse, which stands on St Anthony Head. The tall cliffs around Zone Point make it impossible to reach the beach below by walking from the land. This small, hidden bay is a perfect spot to see amazing Atlantic grey seals. You might even spot their pups (baby seals) on the beach from the headland or from the sea.
Exploring Zone Point
Zone Point offers a mix of different natural areas. The very top of the point is mostly open grassland, like a pasture, with some areas of thick bushes and shrubs on the slopes.
The South West Coast Path
The well-known South West Coast Path runs right through Zone Point. This path helps show where the open grassland changes into the scrubby, wilder areas. It's a great way to explore the beautiful coastline and see the different types of plants and animals that live here.
History of the Name
The name "Zone Point" has been around for a long time. It first appeared on a map of the River Fal in 1597. This map was created by a person named Baptista Boazio. On his map, Zone Point was called Savenheer, or the long coved point. This old name helps us understand how the area was seen hundreds of years ago.
