José Carlos da Costa Araújo (born February 7, 1962 – died July 24, 2009), known as Zé Carlos, was a Brazilian football player. He played as a goalkeeper. Zé Carlos also played for the Brazilian national team. He even played in the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

Zé Carlos played football from 1983 to 2000. He played for several teams in Brazil. These included Americano de Campos, Flamengo, Rio Branco, Cruzeiro, Vitória, XV de Piracicaba, América, and Tubarão.
He also played in Portugal. There, he was a goalkeeper for Vitória de Guimarães, SC Farense, and Felgueiras.
Playing for Flamengo
Zé Carlos had his best time playing for Flamengo. This was in the late 1980s. He helped Flamengo win important titles. In 1987, they won the Brazilian championship. In 1986, they won the Rio de Janeiro state championship. These were big wins for him and his team.
Representing Brazil
During his time at Flamengo, Zé Carlos was often called to play for the Brazil national football team. He was usually the second goalkeeper. The main goalkeeper was Taffarel.

Zé Carlos passed away on July 24, 2009. He had been ill with abdominal cancer. He was in a hospital in Rio de Janeiro for over a month.
After his passing, people remembered him. On July 26, 2009, Flamengo played a football match. They won against Santos at their stadium. The manager of Flamengo, Andrade, was Zé Carlos's friend. They had played together on Flamengo and the Brazilian national team. Andrade dedicated the victory to Zé Carlos. It was a special moment of remembrance.
