Early Life and Beginnings
Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey was born in Barcelona, Spain. Her father was Spanish, and her mother was French-American. She is the oldest of three sisters.
When she was two years old, her parents divorced. At age five, she moved to a small town in southwestern France. She grew up near La Rochelle. There, she enjoyed acting in school plays. However, she did not think acting could be a real job. She felt the countryside was very different from the movie world.
Later, her father moved to the Dominican Republic. Àstrid spent five summers there, working as a waitress. At 17, she moved to Paris by herself. She planned to study osteopathy, which is a type of medicine. But she felt lost and didn't know anyone.
Sadly, her father passed away when he was 46. This event made Àstrid realize that life is short. She decided to follow her true dream: acting. After finishing school, she went straight to drama school.
Àstrid can speak many languages. She is fluent in Catalan, Spanish, French, and Italian. She learned English especially for her role in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Acting Career
Àstrid started her acting journey in 2007 on French television. In 2008, she made her first movie appearance in The Sea Wall. She also began modeling in 2010. She became the face of French Connection's fashion campaigns.
Her big break in English-language films came in 2011. She played the mermaid Syrena in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. She had many auditions in France, Hollywood, and the UK to get this role. She also had to learn English for the part. While filming in Hawaii, she had to stay out of the sun. This was to keep her skin very pale, like a mermaid.
In 2012, Àstrid starred in the Spanish movie El sexo de los ángeles. The next year, she played the main character in the French film Juliette (2013). After that, she appeared in her second English movie, I Origins (2014), as Sofi.
She learned Italian for the movie Alaska (2015). For this role, she was nominated for a David di Donatello for Best Actress award. In 2017, she had a supporting role in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. In 2020, she won Best Actress at the Taormina Film Fest for her work in L'Autre.
