Álex Mumbrú Murcia (born on June 12, 1979) is a Spanish professional basketball coach and former player. He is currently the head coach for the German men's national basketball team. During his playing career, he was a small forward who stood 2.02 meters (6 feet 7.5 inches) tall.

Playing Career Highlights

Álex Mumbrú started his basketball journey with Sant Josep Badalona. This team was connected to Joventut, where he also played some games. He then joined Real Madrid in 2002. After two seasons, he returned to Joventut in 2004.

Returning to Top Teams

Mumbrú rejoined Real Madrid for the 2006–07 season. He later moved to Bilbao Basket in 2009. He played for Bilbao Basket until he retired from playing basketball in 2018. To honor his career, Bilbao Basket retired his number 15 jersey on April 13, 2022. This special event happened during a game against his former team, Real Madrid, which Bilbao won.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Álex Mumbrú began his coaching career.

Coaching Bilbao and Valencia

He became the head coach for Bilbao Basket in 2018. In June 2022, he signed a three-year contract to coach Valencia in the Spanish Liga ACB. He coached Valencia until April 2024.

Leading the German National Team

Since 2024, Álex Mumbrú has been the head coach for the German men's national basketball team.

Spain National Team Achievements

Álex Mumbrú also had a very successful career playing for the senior men's Spanish national team.

Winning Medals for Spain

He helped Spain win a gold medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championship. He also earned a silver medal at the EuroBasket 2007. In 2008, he won another silver medal at the Summer Olympics in Beijing. He then won another gold medal at the EuroBasket 2009.

Brief Retirement and Return

Before the EuroBasket 2011, Mumbrú announced he was retiring from the national team. However, he decided to return and represent Spain again at the EuroBasket 2013.
