Occupation politician, journalist, writer and urbanist

Ángel Fernández de los Ríos (born July 27, 1821 – died June 18, 1880) was an important Spanish figure. He was a politician, a journalist who wrote for newspapers, a writer, and an urbanist. An urbanist is someone who plans how cities should be built and organized.

Ángel Fernández de los Ríos: A Spanish Politician

Ángel Fernández de los Ríos was a key person in Spanish politics during the 1800s. He believed in making Spain a more modern and fair country.

Early Political Steps

In 1842, Ángel Fernández de los Ríos joined the National Militia. This was like a citizen army that helped keep order. He became a member of the Progressive Party (Partido Progresista). This political group wanted to bring big changes to Spain. They aimed for more freedom and rights for people.

He was part of a group called the puros within the Progressive Party. Famous leaders like Baldomero Espartero and Salustiano de Olózaga y Almandoz were also in this group. They wanted strong liberal policies. These policies aimed to make sure the changes from the "bourgeois revolution" (a time of big social changes that helped the middle class) became permanent.

Fernández de los Ríos also took part in protests and uprisings. These were against the government of General Ramón María Narváez between 1847 and 1849.

Role in the 1854 Revolution

Ángel Fernández de los Ríos helped plan the start of the Spanish Revolution of 1854. This was a major uprising that began on July 17, 1854. Other important people involved included Antonio Cánovas del Castillo.

Later that July, he became the secretary of the Board of Salvation, Armament and Defense. This board was led by General Evaristo Fernández de San Miguel. It played a big role in the revolution.

Standing Up for Progress

During the "progressive period" that followed, Fernández de los Ríos joined the opposition. This happened when General Leopoldo O'Donnell stopped the revolution from going further.

In March 1856, he helped start a new group within the Progressive Party. This group, still called the puros, was against the main parliamentary group. Most members of the other group later joined General O'Donnell's Unión Liberal (Liberal Union) party.

The puros group chose General Baldomero Espartero as their leader. They hoped he would keep their movement strong. In 1865, Fernández de los Ríos became the secretary of the Progressive Party's main committee, still led by Espartero.

Exile and Return

He was involved in organizing an uprising in 1866 at the San Gil barracks. This uprising was not successful. Because of this, he had to leave Spain and live in France. He stayed there until the September Revolution of 1868. This revolution brought big changes to the Spanish government. After the revolution succeeded, he returned to Spain in 1869.

Working for the Government

The temporary government of Spain, led by Francisco Serrano, asked Fernández de los Ríos for help. He went to Portugal to talk with Ferdinand II of Portugal. Ferdinand was the father of the Portuguese King, Luís I of Portugal. The Spanish government wanted Ferdinand to become the new King of Spain. General Juan Prim and others supported this idea.

Fernández de los Ríos met Ferdinand in May 1870. However, the talks did not succeed. Ferdinand was worried that becoming King of Spain might make Portugal lose its independence.

Later Years and Final Exile

Fernández de los Ríos supported the creation of the First Spanish Republic in 1873. This was a time when Spain had no king and was governed by elected officials.

After the king returned to power in 1874 (this was called the Bourbon monarchy being restored with Alfonso XII of Spain), Fernández de los Ríos faced problems. He was accused of working for Manuel Ruiz Zorrilla, a leader who was against the monarchy.

In 1876, he was forced to leave Spain again. He moved to Portugal and then to France. He lived in France until he passed away in 1880.
