Playing for Clubs
Ângelo was born in Porto, Portugal, on April 19, 1930. Even though he was from Porto, he was a big fan of Benfica, a rival team from Lisbon. Because of this, he chose not to play for his hometown club, FC Porto.
He started playing football at age 15 in 1945 for Académico do Porto. He played there for three years. Later, there was a mix-up with his transfer to FC Porto. This led to the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) temporarily stopping him from playing.
After a few years, when Ângelo was 20, a scout from Benfica saw him play. He was then invited to join Benfica's reserve team in 1951. The FPF also lifted his ban.
Ângelo played for Benfica's main team for 13 seasons, from 1952 to 1965. He played in 285 games and scored 4 goals. During his time with Benfica, he helped them win many important titles. He won the Primeira Liga (the top Portuguese league) 7 times. He also won the Portuguese Cup 5 times.
One of his biggest achievements was winning the European Cup twice in a row. This happened in 1961 and 1962. The European Cup was the biggest club competition in Europe. He retired from playing football when he was 35 years old.
Playing for Portugal
Ângelo also played for the Portuguese national team. He played in 20 international games for his country. His first game was in 1953 against Austria. His last game for Portugal was in 1962 against Bulgaria.
His Passing
Ângelo passed away peacefully on October 11, 2020, at the age of 90. He was with his family in Lisbon, Portugal.
