Édouard Delessert (born December 15, 1828 – died March 27, 1898) was a talented French artist who worked as a painter, an archaeologist, and a photographer. He was one of the early pioneers in photography.

A Life of Art and Discovery

Édouard Delessert came from a well-known family. His parents were Valentine de Laborde, whose family was involved in business, and Gabriel Delessert, a banker.

Édouard was interested in many things. He first studied law, but his true passions were art and history. In 1850, he joined an important trip with Félicien de Saulcy to explore the Dead Sea and Syria. This journey was just the beginning of his travels. He also visited Turkey, Greece, Sardinia, and Italy, exploring ancient sites and capturing their beauty.

Delessert was a pioneer in early photography, especially using a method called the calotype. This was an important step in making photography what it is today. He also wrote for a magazine called Revue de Paris from 1851 to 1858. He even started his own critical magazine, L'Athenaeum.

Later in his life, Édouard Delessert tried working in business. He also served on the board of directors for the National Bank of Haiti.

A famous writer named Prosper Mérimée was a mentor to Édouard. Mérimée helped him develop his ideas about art and literature.

Édouard Delessert passed away on March 27, 1898. He was buried in the Passy cemetery in Paris, in his family's tomb.
