Discovering Ölmstad Church
The most famous building in Ölmstad is the Ölmstad Church (Ölmstad kyrka). It is a very old church, first built way back in the 12th century! That means it's almost 900 years old.
Building the First Stone Church
Monks from Alvastra Abbey started building the first stone church in Ölmstad. They used strong stone to make it last a long time. You can still see parts of their work today.
Old Treasures Inside the Church
Inside the church, you can find some amazing old items.
- The baptismal font is from the very first church built in the 12th century. It was used to baptize babies hundreds of years ago.
- The pulpit was added in 1649. This is where the priest stands to give sermons.
- There is also a large crucifix from the 15th century. It has been moved to different spots in the church over the years.
A Church Through History
The church has seen many events over the centuries. In 1567, during a war called the Northern Seven Years' War, Danish soldiers attacked the church. They took many valuable things from it. Luckily, the church was rebuilt soon after this event. In 1729, a new tower was built for the church. This tower replaced an older bell tower that was there before.
