Þórdís Gísladóttir facts for kids
Þórdís Gísladóttir, also known as Thordis Gisladottir, was born on July 14, 1965. She is an Icelandic author who writes books for children, poetry, and novels. She also works as a translator.
Þórdís is famous for her fun children's stories about characters named Randalín and Mundi. Her poetry has also been very popular. She has worked as a project manager and a teacher at the University of Iceland and Uppsala University in Sweden. She was also a web editor for the Nordic Council. Þórdís has translated 17 books and a play for the Reykjavik City Theater. She edited a magazine about children's books and wrote about literature for a Norwegian newspaper. She even made radio programs for The Icelandic National Radio. In 2010, Þórdís Gísladóttir won the Tómas Guðmundsson Award for her first poetry book, Leyndarmál annarra ("Secrets of Others"). Her second poetry book, Velúr (2014), and her children's books Randalín, Mundi og afturgöngurnar (2015) and Doddi - bók sannleikans (2016) were nominated for the Icelandic literature prize. The book Doddi - bók sannleikans was co-written with Hildur Knútsdóttir. Her fourth poetry book, Óvissustig (2016), was nominated for The May Star award. This award is given for the best poetry book of the year in Iceland.
About Þórdís Gísladóttir
Þórdís studied language and literature at the University of Iceland. She is well-known for her children's stories about Randalín and Mundi. These books helped her win the Icelandic Women Literature Prize in 2013. She also received the Booksellers Prize for her work. The third book in the series, Randalín, Mundi og afturgöngurnar, was nominated for the Icelandic Literary Award. Þórdís also has a special degree in bilingual studies from Uppsala University in Sweden.
In 2010, she received the Tómas Guðmundsson Award for her poetry book Leyndarmál annarra. This book explores the hidden parts of everyday life. Her next poetry book, Velúr (which means Velvet), has soft and often imaginative poems. They explore memories or imaginary worlds.
The book Randalín og Mundi is a lively and funny story for children. It answers fun questions like "Who lives in a box and swallows a mouse every Sunday?" The adventure continues in Randalín og Mundi í Leynilundi ("Randalin and Mundi in the Secret Garden"). In this book, the two friends leave town for a few days. They meet unusual people and interesting, but sometimes scary, creatures.
Þórdís Gísladóttir has also translated many books by Swedish authors. Some of these authors include Henning Mankell and Ingmar Bergman. She has also worked at an advertising agency. For a time, she was the editor for a children's culture magazine called Börn og menning.
